Have you been looking for a great memory foam mattress pad? More and more people are discovering and recommending memory foam as a great bedding material. Visco elastic foam mattresses have the unique capability to conform to the shape and contour of your body. The benefit of this is to gently align your spine and ease stress on your pressure points; besides these orthopedic effects, it will help you to get a much better night's sleep.

Invented by NASA in the 1960's, memory foam is made of a gel-like polyurethane material that is able to hold impressions on its surface. Hospitals first began using memory foam mattress pads in the 1980s with their bedridden patients in order to help reduce discomfort and bed sores. The visco elastic foam mattress pad was first introduced to the public in the 1990's, though at a very high price. Several different private companies began marketing their own versions when they realized the marketing potential. This has led to ever declining prices due to the ever growing market, allowing more and more people to be able to afford memory foam beds.

The pads themselves are meant to slide right over your mattress, and are only about two or three inches thick. They are extremely pliable, allowing them to conform to your body contours; this will save you the trouble of tossing and turning in an attempt to find the most comfortable position to sleep in. Buying a memory foam pad will also save you money, as they are much cheaper than buying an entire mattress.

However, before buying a memory foam pad, you must consider how thick you want your pad to be. Thicker is generally better, but those with beds that already include a pillow topper may opt to go with a slightly thinner pad. The best thickness for a pad is somewhere between three and five inches; those with a pillow topper will want something closer to three, and those without will want one closer to five.

The next to consider before buying a memory foam pad is how dense you want it to be. How dense the pad is will usually be a sign of how convenient the pad is. Pads that are more dense are firmer and offer less give; pads that are less dense offer more cushioning but offer less support.

If your current mattress is worn out but you are not ready to pay for new, full foam mattress, getting a memory foam mattress pad is definitely the best option for you. You will get a better, more comfortable night sleep with a memory foam mattress pad.

You should also buy covers made from soft cotton and water resistant polymers in order to protect your memory foam pad from spills and any other accidents. Memory foam mattresses and mattress pads are usually available from most furniture and mattress stores.
